The car remains a crucial mode of transport for business travellers with demand exceeding capacity on many British roads
The GTMC is supportive of policies to control demand through road pricing and also through the appropriate expansion of capacity.
The business traveller is broadly accepting of the principle of road pricing as long as investment in alternatives precedes implementation of any scheme and is funded by hypothecation of future road pricing revenues. Such schemes should not simply be a means of raising funds for local councils that are then spent elsewhere.
In terms of increasing capacity the GTMC accepts that we cannot build our way out of current congestion but, in tandem with demand management, does support proposals for new tolled motorways using the M6 toll as a model.
The GTMC is supportive of Government efforts to lead on development of low carbon vehicles and believes funding should be maintained in this area.
